Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC (Dec.1, 2018) – Elizabeth City State generated 35 points off turnovers as the Vikings rode an aggressive defensive effort to a 72-45 win over Virginia University of Lynchburg in the Robert L. Vaughan Center.
Freshman guard
Angel James had six of her 13 points to ignite a decisive 14-7 ECSU run prior to halftime, helping give the Vikings a 44-28 lead at the break. James nailed a 3-point jumper with 5:10 left in the half to start the rally and freshman forward
Azhante Rodgers capped the outburst with another trey with 1:39 remaining in the period.
ECSU limited the visitors to just six points in the third quarter to extend its lead to 61-34. Freshman guard
Asia Deal had five steals and Rodgers, four as the Vikings (4-3) collected 20 steals while forcing 42 Dragon turnovers to spell the difference in the contest.
Junior forward
Devona Stell pace ECSU in points with 18 and rebounds eight as the Vikings notched their second straight victory to rise above .500 for the first time in the young season. Senior guard
Jalyn Brown contributed 14 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals while James added five rebounds. Rodgers poured in 10 points to put four Vikings in double digits.
Freshman center Moninque Houzer led the Dragons with 15 points and freshman guard Jonna Roberson tallied 11 points while joining Houzer with six rebounds. VUL (2-3) dominated the rebounding, 47-35, behind a dozen boards by junior forward Ashley O'Neal.
The visitors shot a solid 40.4% from the floor, but because of the turnovers, they attempted 27 fewer shots than the Vikings. Brown and junior guard
DeNayia Holmes each went four for four from the charity stripe to help ECSU drain 15 of 19 free throws.
