Second Half Shooting Woes Plagued Lady Vikings against WSSU

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Elizabeth City State women's basketball team fell in the first round of the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament 50-41 to Winston-Salem State University in Bojangles Arena Tuesday evening.

With the loss, ECSU ends its season 5-18 overall, 3-12 in conference play, and 1-9 in the CIAA Northern division; while WSSU improves to 14-13 on the season.

The Lady Vikings came out in the second half struggling to find the bottom of the basket, finishing the game shooting only 25.4 percent from the field (17-of-67), 12.5 percent from behind the arc (3-of-24), and 50 percent from the free-throw line (4-of-8).

Elizabeth City State took a 21-18 lead into halftime, after shooting 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from the floor, 25 percent from behind the arc (1-of-4), and 100 percent from the candy stripe (2-of-2) in the first quarter. ECSU finished the half outscoring Winston-Salem, 12-10 in the paint, 4-0 in fast break points, and 11-7 in points off turnovers.

For the game, the Lady Rams outscored ECSU 22-20 with points in the paint and 17-8 bench points. ECSU led by six with 00:19 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Lady Vikings led WSSU in points off turnovers, 14-9 and fast break points 4-2. The teams were tied in second chance points, 8-all.

Junior forward D'Asya Wilson paced Elizabeth City State with a double-double, 10 points and eleven boards. Junior Chalise Greenwood added 10 boards; while junior forward Keechell Johnson added nine in the effort.

Jahlia Williams spearheaded Winston-Salem State with eleven points; while Jasmine Carter added 12 rebounds in the victory.
