Lady Vikings Fall to Chowan 63-61

MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's basketball team hung on for a 63-61 victory over the visiting Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 16-6 on the season and 10-2 in league play with the win, while the Lady Vikings slide to 7-13 overall and 3-8 against CIAA competition.

Jalyn Brown paced Elizabeth City State with 16 points. Jasmine Nixon followed with 15 points and seven rebounds (three offensive, four defensive) with Imani Heggins adding 12 points for the Lady Vikings in the setback.

Chowan had four players score double-digit points in the win, led by Alisha Mobley with 22 points. Dhyamond Crenshaw added 14 points and seven rebounds (three offensive, four defensive) while Jordan Payne added 13 points for the Chowan Blue and White. Jada Lee tallied 12 points and nine rebounds (two offensive, seven defensive) for the Hawks.

The Lady Vikings jumped to a quick 10-5 lead by the midway point of the first quarter before a jumper by Mobley, layup by Lee and jumper by Crenshaw gave the Hawks a narrow 11-10 edge.The Hawks held on to the momentum and used Mobley's 3-pointer to earn a 22-12 lead after the first ten minutes of play.

The Lady Vikings refused to back down and battled back to cut the deficit to three points (26-23) by the 4:42 mark of the second quarter. With Chowan leading 31-29 with 1:36 on the clock, a jumper by Crenshaw led to a 7-0 run for the Hawks, leaving Elizabeth City State trailing 38-29 heading into the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter was all about Chowan, as the Hawks led by as many as 17 points before heading into the final ten minutes of play with a commanding 51-38 advantage.

Elizabeth City State University opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to make the score 51-46 with 7:10 left in the game. The Hawks clung to the narrow advantage down the final stretch of the contest but the Lady Vikings remained within striking distance.

With 17 seconds left in the game, Lee's jumper and successful free throw gave the Hawks a 63-58 edge but Khadijah Bryant answered with a 3-pointer for the Lady Vikings to leave Chowan grasping to a two-point lead. Ultimately, the late rally fall short as the Hawks managed to hang on for the 63-61 win.

Chowan returns to action on Feb. 10 as the Hawks travel to take on Virginia State University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
