TAKOMA PARK, MD- Imani Heggins and Jalyn Brown both tallied double figures as the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings toppled Washington Adventist University 63-54 Tuesday evening at The Pitt.
The duo, who earlier in the day garnered weekly honors from the CIAA, helped the Lady Vikings earn a season split with the Lady Shock who topped ECSU 64-60 on November 21st in Elizabeth City. Heggins finished with a team high 14 points while Brown chipped in with 10 points.
Jerria Brown-McDaniel led all scorers with 22 points for Washington Adventist who falls to 7-11 overall on the season.
Khadijah Bryant hit the first basket of the game at the 9:40 mark to give the Lady Vikings a lead that they would not relinquish. The only tie of the evening came with 3:56 remaining in the opening quarter; WAU's Natalie Harrison hit a three pointer to cap a 6-0 spurt for a 9-9 score but ECSU regrouped to take a 17-14 advantage heading to the second stanza.
The Lady Vikings' best offensive output came in the in the second quarter where they outscored Washington Adventist 21-8. Defensively ECSU forced 10 turnovers in the second quarter and held the Shock to just two field goals. Overall WAU committed 33 points that swung 28 points in the Lady Vikings' favor.
With 5:40 left in the first half a score by Melissa Reid pushed the ECSU lead to double digits and they took a 38-22 advantage at the intermission. Brown hit a jumper with 4:35 left in the game to give ECSU their largest lead of the game, a 20-pont spread (61-41).
ECSU (7-12, CIAA 3-7) will return to action on Saturday against Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC. Game time is scheduled for 2pm.
