VIRGINIA UNION TAKES SOFTBALL TWINBILL FROM ECSU

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Virginia Union University earned a doubleheader sweep over Elizabeth City State University 9-0 and 7-1 Sunday afternoon at the ECSU Softball Field.

In game one the Lady Panthers earned their first win of the season with a 5 inning, 9-0 shutout of ECSU. Jareece Sales pitched a complete game, fanning 7 of 17 batters faced while allowing only one hit.

Beverly Smith was 3 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI and two runs scored to lead Virginia Union. The game was shortened after the Lady Panthers did most of their scoring in their half of the third inning. ECSU committed the game's three errors in the third inning and the Lady Panthers capitalized with five runs off six hits for a 6-0 lead. They added two runs in the fourth and insurance in the fifth for the 9-0 win.

Kayley Surrento accounted for ECSU's lone hit in game one, a single in the bottom of the first.

Surrento collected four hits in game two but it was not enough as the Lady Vikings fell 7-1. Virginia Union scattered runs over the second, third, fifth and seventh while Shontel Linnett earned her first win over the seven inning outing. She struck out six but threw a wild pitch in bottom of the sixth that scored ECSU's Casey Cartwright.

The Lady Vikings had their chances, stranding seven runs in the game.

ECSU (0-2) will return to action in a home doubleheader tomorrow against Davis and Elkins. Game time is scheduled for 1pm.
