WILSON, N.C. -- The Elizabeth City State University softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Barton College on Sunday at Jeffries Field.
Game 1 — ECSU 1, Barton 7
The Vikings battled early but were unable to keep pace with Barton, falling 7–1 in the opener.
Barton struck first in the opening inning before ECSU answered in the second, tying the game at 1–1 on a sacrifice fly from Anaya Jones that scored Bryn Ernest. The game remained close until the Bulldogs capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting, breaking things open with a five-run fifth inning.
ECSU managed just two hits in the contest, with Ernest recording a triple and Sophia Simmons adding a hit. Shaina Lugo took the loss in the circle, while Oreanna Donaldson provided relief.
Game 2 — ECSU 3, Barton 13
In game two, Barton used a dominant first inning to take control early and secure a 13–3 victory in a run-shortened contest.
The Bulldogs plated eight runs in the opening frame, highlighted by a three-run triple from Makenzie Burroughs. ECSU responded with three runs in the second inning, taking advantage of defensive errors and an RBI single from Olivia Walker to cut the deficit to 7–3.
However, Barton answered with additional runs in the third and fourth innings to extend the lead and put the game out of reach.
Shelby Edwards led ECSU with two hits, while Bryn Ernest and Anaya Jones each contributed offensively. Oreanna Donaldson was charged with the loss in the circle.
