CHARLOTTE, NC- Johnson C. Smith University earned a 70-50 win over Elizabeth City State University Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the 2016 CIAA Basketball Tournament.
The Lady Golden Bulls improve to 17-11 overall and now advance to a quarterfinal matchup with Virginia Union University. Asha Jordan paced her team with a game high 18 points.
In the fourth and deciding quarter, JCSU outscored ECSU 13-6, with Breona Jones' three-pointer at the 9:56 mark representing the Lady Vikings' only field goal. Two free throws with 18 seconds left by Krista White gave JCSU their largest lead of the game and subsequently the final point spread.
Jones led the Lady Vikings in scoring with 15 points off the bench. Jasmine Nixon added 11 points off the bench as the ECSU reserves bested Johnson C. Smith 33-19.
JCSU opened the game on a 6-0 run and held the lead the entire contest. After taking a 41-27 advantage at halftime JCSU was outscored by a point, 17-16 in the third quarter. Imani Heggins' layup with 3:19 left in the third cut the Golden Bulls' lead to single digits, 50-42, but JCSU closed the session with a 7-2 run to push their lead back to double digits 57-44.
The Lady Golden Bulls used a run midway through the second quarter for their first double digit lead and ultimately control of the game.
Elizabeth City State finishes the 2015-2016 season with a record of 8-18.
