BOWIE, MD- The Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings overcame a 21 point deficit to capture a 47-45 overtime win against Bowie State University Saturday afternoon at A.C. Jordan Arena.
The Lady Vikings held Bowie State to seven combined points in the fourth quarter and overtime in the two point triumph which gives ECSU a season sweep over the Lady Bulldogs. The win locks up the number five seed in the CIAA Northern Division for next week's conference tournament. The Lady Vikings will face the number four seed out of the CIAA Southern Division on Tuesday at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte.
As for Saturday's contest, ECSU faced their largest deficit of 21 points after a layup by Kiara Colston made the score 38-17 with 3:23 left in the third quarter. The Lady Vikings closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to trail 38-26 headed to the fourth.
In the final ten minutes of regulation, Bowie State managed only three points while ECSU erased the Lady Bulldog lead. Jalyn Brown capped a 10-0 run with a jumper with 1:39 left before Ashley Jennings hit one of two from the line for a 41-30 BSU advantage. With 25 seconds left Brown sank two from the charity stripe to send the game to overtime tied at 41 all.
The Lady Viking scored all of their points from the free throw line in the extra session; Brown, Imani Heggins and Khadijah Bryant combined to go 6-6 and ECSU held on for the thrilling win. Heggins finished with a game high 17 points and Kyah Proctor put up a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds for BSU who finishes the regular season at 10-16 overall.
