ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Virginia Union University shook off a slow start to earn a convincing 87-61 win over Elizabeth City State University Wednesday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.
The VUU tandem of Lady Walker and Kiana Johnson both turned in impressive performances as the #13 ranked Lady Panthers improve to 21-2 overall and 13-2 in the CIAA. Walker put up 29 points and 15 rebounds while Johnson, the top scorer in NCAA Division II, finished with a triple double of 26 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists.
The two teams went toe to toe in the first half as the scored changed hands 10 times. Jalyn Brown hit a jumper as at the close of the first half to give the Lady Vikings a 29-28 at the intermission.
VUU took control of the game, opening the second half with a 17-3 run, and seized a 47-33 advantage with 3:23 left in the third quarter. Khadijah Bryant connected on a jumper with 2:20 left in the third to pull ECSU within nine, 47-38 but the Lady Panther closed the quarter on an 8-0 run for a 55-38 lead to start the final ten minutes.
The Lady Panthers shot 65% in the second half and their lead ballooned to 20 plus with 6:22 remaining. Imani Heggins led the Lady Vikings with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds.
ECSU (7-17, CIAA 3-12) will close out the regular season on Saturday at Bowie State University in Bowie, MD. Game time is scheduled for 2pm.
