Courtesy of the Onnidan Group ELIZABETH CITY, NC (Feb. 13, 2016) It was a tale of two halves in the women's basketball game between Elizabeth City State University and Virginia State University.
ECSU was a sizzling 89% from the three-point line in the first half on the shooting of Alliyah Floyd (5 for 5) and Breona Jones (3 for 4) to push the Lady Vikings to a 39-38 halftime lead.
After halftime, VSU outscored ECSU, 23-11, in the third quarter and breezed to a 79-69 victory at the R.L. Vaughan Center, Saturday afternoon.
While ECSU was dropping three-pointers, VSU dominated the boards out-rebounding the Lady Vikings 33-22 and outscoring ECSU 14-4 in the paint.
Virginia State's Wynterra Pittman led all scorers with 35 points, 22 coming in the first half. She also pulled down nine rebounds for the game.
Jones led ECSU's scoring with 20 points. Floyd finished the game with 18 points but only made one three-point shot in the second half. Imani Heggins contributed 16 points.
The Trojans' Kaseula Cooper (14 pts) and Nandi Taylor (11pts) joined Pittman as double-figure scorers. The loss drops ECSU to 7-16 overall, 3-11 in conference play and 2-6 in the Northern Division.
Virginia State improves to 11-13 overall, 6-8 in the CIAA and 3-5 in the division.
The Lady Vikings return to action on February 17 when they host division co-leader Virginia Union. It will be Senior Night with tipoff set for 5:30pm in the Vaughan Center.
