ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - The Elizabeth City State University women's basketball team dropped a 47-36 heartbreaker to Salem International University Friday evening in the R.L. Vaughan Center. It was the final non-conference game for the Lady Vikings this season.
With the loss, Elizabeth City State finishes its non-conference contests with a 2-6 record and is 4-7 overall on the season. SIU improves to 2-13.
After jumping out to a 6-0 lead four minutes into to contest, the Lady Tigers went on an 11-5 run to tie the contest at 11-all to start the second quarter of play. SIU continued pressing the gas in the second quarter, as they went on a 13-0 run and took a 24-11 lead into the half and never looked back.
The Lady Vikings made a run of their own coming out the half, outscoring Salem International 17-9 in the quarter and making it a 33-28 contest. ECSU pulled the lead within three but wasn't able to grasp the lead back. SIU closed out the game outscoring Elizabeth City State, 14-8.
Senior center Jazmine Nixon paced the Lady Vikings with a double-double, recording a team-high 18 points and eleven rebounds.
Jiahna Flood-Francis led the Lady Tigers with 20 points; while Keishia Gilmore added 13 to round out the scorers in double-figures.
Elizabeth City State women's and men's basketball teams will return to conference action, Thursday, Jan. 5 in Salisbury, N.C. facing Livingstone. Tip for the women is slated for 5:30 p.m. and the men to follow at 7:30 p.m.
