Lady Vikings Defeat Shaw, 51-45, Tuesday Evening

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - The Elizabeth City State University women's basketball team defeated Shaw University, 51-45 in its conference opener Tuesday evening in the R.L. Vaughan Center.

With the victory, the Lady Vikings improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play; while the Lady Bears fell to (2-8, 0-1).

ECSU jumped out to a 21-15 lead to close out the first half over Shaw. Although the Lady Vikings carried the 6 point lead into the half, they struggled shooting from the field, making only 29.4 percent of their shots and 1-of-5 from behind the arc.

Shaw ignited an 18-9 run coming out of the half and took a 33-30 lead going into the fourth quarter. ECSU's sophomore Jalyn Brown and freshman Chalise Greenwood sparked a 21-12 run to cap a 51-45 contest.

The Lady Vikings shot 33.9 percent from the field, 25 percent from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent from the candy stripe for the game. Brown paced Elizabeth City State with 16 points and four steals. Senior Jazmine Nixon had a game and career -high 14 boards to lead ECSU.

Falecia Cabral led the Lady Bearss in points with 13; while Imani Heggins spearheaded Shaw in rebounds with six. She also recorded 12 points and Stephanie Custodio added 10 to round out the double-digit scoring for SU.

The Lady Vikings are set to host Saint Augustine's University Thursday, Dec. 15 in the R.L. Vaughan Center at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's team at 7:30 p.m.
