NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - With conference play on the horizon, the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings continue to iron out some kinks while overwhelming The Apprentice School, 45-35, Wednesday evening in Apprentice Gymnasium.
The Lady Vikings (2-5) came out on fire in the first quarter, outscoring the Builders, 13-4; a run ignited by sophomore guard Jalyn Brown. ECSU shot 37.5 percent from the field, connecting on six-of-the-16 shots attempted with 10 boards.
Elizabeth City State stalled in the second quarter, shooting only 22.2 percent while making only two of their nine attempts. The Builders went into the half on an eleven-seven run but trailed, 20-15.
In the third quarter, ECSU slowly began to slowly pull away from the Apprentice School, recording nine more points to close the quarter with a 29-21 lead.
The Lady Vikings outscored the Builders, 16-14 to capitalize on its second victory on the season and enter their conference slate on a positive note.
Brown led ECSU with 12 points offensively; while junior forward D'Asya Wilson grabbed ten boards, leading the team defensively.
As a team, the Lady Vikings concluded the game shooting 39.5 percent from the field, 40 percent from downtown, and 50 percent from the line.
ECSU hosts Shaw University, Tuesday, December 13 at the R.L. Vaughan Center. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
