Lady Vikings Set to Host 2016 ECSU Classic

NORFOLK, Va. - After taking a tough loss to open the season, the Elizabeth State University Women basketball team will be looking to bounce back Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 19 while hosting its ECSU Classic at the Vaughan Center.

Teams competing are: Miles College, Chowan University, St. Augustine's University, Benedict College and host team ECSU. Tipoff for the first game, which features St. Augustine's and Miles, is at 5 p.m. with Benedict and ECSU to follow at 7 p.m. Saturday's game times are slated for 4 p.m. (Chowan vs. Benedict) and 6 p.m. (ECSU vs. Miles).

ECSU fell to 0-1 on the season after a 52-38 loss to Claflin University on Tuesday evening in Orangeburg, S.C. where they shot 37 percent from the field in the first half but didn't fair so well in the second, shooting only 17.4 percent.

Jazmine Nixon led the Lady Vikings offensively with nine points; while Tamara Harvey added eight in the effort. Chalise Greenwood and Anaya Eason led the team defensively, grabbing five boards each, respectively.

As a team, Elizabeth City State shot 28 percent from the field, 15.8 percent from behind the arc, and 58.3 percent from the candy stripe.

Miles enter the tournament with a 1-0 record after knocking off the Selma University Bulldogs in their season home opener Wednesday evening. Victoria Sutton led the Bears offense shooting six-of-nine from the field with three-of-five made three pointers. Ashley McCrear spearheaded the defense, grabbing nine boards.

Chowan brings a 3-0 record to the Vaughan Center. Coming off a huge 70-65 victory over Francis Marion University Wednesday evening in Florence, S.C., the Lady Hawks are looking to continue their road streak. Jordan Payne paced CU finishing the game with a team-high 13 points, eleven rebounds, and five assists.

The Lady Falcons are 1-2 after a loss 99-59 loss to Norfolk State University Tuesday night in Norfolk, Va. Diana Clark was the leading scorer for SAU with 18 points and four rebounds. Quiera Gilmore gave the Lady Falcons a boast as well adding eleven in the effort. Defensively, St. Aug was led by both Kaaliya Williams with four rebounds and Paulette Addison with four blocks on the evening.

The Lady Tigers are 0-2 on the season after a tough loss to the University of South Carolina-Aiken Wednesday evening in Aiken, S.C. Dropping a 68-61 contest, Zairra Harris led Benedict with a team-high 21 points; while MiKeisha Moore added 15 being the only two Lady Tigers in double-figures, respectively.
