ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Chowan University captured its six straight win with a convincing 79-54 win over the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings Saturday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.
In what was the Northern Division opener for both teams, the Hawks move to 12-5 overall and improve to 5-1 in CIAA. Jordan Payne led four Hawks in double figures with a game high 24 points.
The Lady Vikings led the entire first half and took their largest lead of the game (15-6) on an Imani Heggins layup with 1:34 left in the opening quarter. After Breona Jones drained a three pointer to make the score 23-15 at the 4:59 mark, Chowan closed the half on an 8-2 run for a two point ECSU lead (25-23) at the intermission.
When play resumed, the Hawks went on an 11-0 run to seize a 34-25 advantage and would go on to outscore the Lady Vikings 30-12 in the third quarter. ECSU committed 7 turnovers in the third which gave Chowan a 10-1 edge in points off miscues and a 13-0 benefit in fast break points.
Chowan outscored ECSU 56-29 in the second half on 55% shooting from the floor.
Breona Jones finished with a season best 22 points and Jasmine Nixon chipped in with 13 points.
ECSU (4-11, CIAA 1-6) will face Lincoln University on Wednesday at the RL Vaughan Center. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm.
