LADY VIKINGS FALL TO WINSTON-SALEM STATE 54-45

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Winston-Salem State University held off a furious fourth quarter rally for a 54-45 victory over Elizabeth City State University Monday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

Brianna Arnold topped WSSU in scoring with 11 points while Trei Torain and Kandace Tate chipped in with 10 points apiece.

For the second straight contest Lady Viking freshman Jalyn Brown was the game's top scorer with 15 points. After playing from behind the entire game, the Lady Vikings opened the final quarter on a 12-0 run to take their first lead. Alliyah Floyd capped that run with a three pointer with 4:51 remaining and a 42-39 advantage in favor of the Lady Vikings. Jatzmin Johnson hit a layup at the 4:42 mark that ended a nearly seven minute Ram scoring drought which stretched back to the third quarter. Breona Jones made one of two from the free throw line to give ECSU a 43-41 lead with 3:57 left in the game.

From that point on the Rams closed the game on a 13-2 run to pick up their first CIAA victory of the year (1-3) and lift their overall mark to 5-8. WSSU turned in a solid performance from the free throw line (16-17) and used their size advantage to dominate ECSU on the glass 43-24.

The Lady Vikings' 45 points is their second lowest scoring output of the season (44 vs Benedict). Jones finished the night with 10 points for ECSU.

ECSU (4-10, CIAA 1-5) will open up play in the CIAA Northern Division against Chowan University on Saturday at 2pm in the RL Vaughan Center.
