Elizabeth City, NC- Freshman guard Jalyn Brown scored a game high 17 points but it was not enough as Johnson C. Smith University trumped Elizabeth City State University 66-53 Saturday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.
Ashley Porter and Krista White both scored 13 apiece to lead the Lady Golden Bulls as JCSU improves to 10-6 on the year and 3-2 in the CIAA. Johnson C. Smith ended the first quarter trailing ECSU by a point but opened the second stanza on a 16-3 run to take a 28-16 lead with 5:10 left in the first half.
They held the Lady Vikings to 13 points in each of the first two quarters and took a 36-26 lead into the locker room.
For the game JCSU dominated the paint with a 42-22 advantage and held a 13-2 edge in second chance points. They were +13 in rebounding and topped the Lady Vikings in bench production 30 to 5.
With 2:27 remaining in the third quarter the Lady Vikings cut the lead to under double digits on two made free throws by Breona Jones. ECSU was then held scoreless for nearly five minutes while the Lady Golden Bulls built their largest lead of the game, an 18-point spread, with 8:52 left in regulation.
Imani Heggins and Jasmine Nixon finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively, rounding out ECSU's double figure scorers.
ECSU (4-9, CIAA 1-4) will return to the court on Monday as they play host to Winston-Salem State University. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm at the RL Vaughan Center.
