CAMDEN, NC-Virginia State University played spoiler at Elizabeth City State University's softball senior day, sweeping the Lady Vikings 3-0 and 11-4 Sunday afternoon.
In the day's opener the Trojans collected 10 hits in a 3-0 win over ECSU. In the top of the 3rd Cameryn Smith's RBI single gave VSU their first run of the day. Jamilia Smith opened the 5th inning with a double and later scored when Lindsey Wilkins grounded out to Kelsey White. After five innings of work McKenzie Love came in to relieve Wilkins who earned a three hit shutout.
Game two had a tie and two lead changes before the Trojans pulled away for the 11-4 victory. Virginia State held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the 3rd inning when Kayley Surrento's RBI single scored Kiyana Merritt from second base. Surrento later crossed home plate after a throwing error by the short stop.
VSU broke the tie with a run in their half of the fourth but ECSU responded with a 2 run, 3 hit inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Trojans then went on a tear, spreading 10 of their 16 hits for the game over the last three innings to put the game out of reach.
Lilyann Arnold struck out seven in 6 and 1/3 innings pitched in game two.
Virginia State improves to 9-16 (CIAA 7-7) while the Lady Vikings fall to 2-23 and 2-9 in league play.
ECSU will make up the second game of their rained out doubleheader with Virginia Union on Friday at 5pm in Richmond, VA. They will then wrap up the regular season with road double headers at Bowie State and The Lincoln University.
