ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Virginia Union University held off a late rally to defeat Elizabeth City State University 8-4 in softball action Saturday afternoon at Pasquotank County High School.
Game two was called before it began due to rain.
The Lady Panthers held a commanding 8-1 lead heading into ECSU's half of the 6th inning. After loading the bases, the Lady Vikings scored three runs off RBI singles to make the score 8-4. ECSU's defense retired three straight batters in the top of the 7th but their offense stalled in their half of the inning stranding a runner for the final point spread.
Quincy Lewis went the distance to earn her seventh decision for the first place Lady Panthers who improve to 14-4 overall and 11-2 in the CIAA.
As a team the Lady Vikings bested the Lady Panthers in hits by one 11-10 and both teams stranded eight runners in the game. Haley Williams was 2 for 3 at the plate while Kiyana Merritt went 2 for 4, with an RBI and a triple on the afternoon.
