RALEIGH, NC- The Elizabeth City State softball team suffered three setbacks at day one of the cross division softball roundup at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
After several delays due to poor field conditions, the Lady Vikings squared off against Saint Augustine's at 2pm Saturday afternoon. The Lady Falcons held on to defeat the Lady Vikings 5-3 in seven innings.
Saint Augustine's went in front 1-0 in the top of the first and the score remained that way through five complete innings. The Lady Falcons added three runs in their half of the 6th inning for a 4-0 advantage only to see the Lady Vikings battle back in the bottom of the inning.
Back to back doubles by Rachel Gilliken and Jessica White set up ECSU's first score of the day, and RBI single by Kelsey White. Tiara Webb then followed with a two-run homer to cut the Lady Falcons' lead to one run.
SAU responded with an insurance run in the top of the 7th inning for the final point spread and ECSU stranded one runner in their final at bat for the final point spread.
ECSU's struggled to generate offense in their final two games of the day, suffering losses to Shaw University 9-1 and Winston-Salem State 8-0.
The Lady Vikings will wrap up the softball roundup tomorrow with games against Livingstone (11:30am), Johnson C. Smith (1:30pm), and Fayetteville State (4pm). All games will be played at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh.
