RICHMOND, VA- Virginia Union University captured two wins over Elizabeth City State University 13-12 and 9-3 Sunday afternoon at the VUU softball field.
Game one saw the Lady Panthers pad a one run lead with a seven-run third inning to take an 11-3 advantage. The Lady Vikings responded in their half of the fourth inning with three runs. Kiyana Merritt's RBI double scored Kayley Surrento before both Merritt and Diamond Davis crossed the plate for unearned runs on an error by VUU's Ro'Shalia Williams.
ECSU tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth however the Lady Panthers countered with two runs in their half of the inning.
The Lady Vikings managed four runs in the their final at bat but fell a run short when Kelsey White grounded out to third base to end the game and VUU prevailed 13-12.
In the nightcap Virginia Union held a 4-0 lead through five complete innings. The Lady Vikings got two runs in the top of the sixth but the Lady Panthers exploded with five runs in their half of the inning to move ahead 9-2. ECSU, who managed only four hits in game two, scored a run in top of the 7th for the final point spread.
ECSU (0-7, CIAA 0-2) will face Division I Howard University in a three game home-stand beginning tomorrow at 1pm. Tuesday's double header will take place at the South Park Sports Complex.
