RICHMOND, VA- The Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings escaped with a 59-58 overtime win over Virginia Union University Wednesday night at Barco-Stevens Hall.
ECSU earns the season split with VUU despite being out-rebounded by the Lady Panthers 48-34.
Breona Jones and Jadda Jefferies scored 16 apiece to propel ECSU to their fourth straight win. VUU was paced by their all-time scoring leader Ashle Freeman who finished with a game high 28 points in her final home game.
After a Breona Jones layup, the Lady Panthers faced a 47-35 deficit with 5:42 remaining in the game. VUU closed the half on a 14-2 run to tie the game 49-49 and after Jasmine Nixon's game winner missed its mark the game went to an extra five minutes.
Ashle Freeman sank two free throws with 2:11 left in overtime to give Virginia Union (7-16, CIAA 3-11) a 56-53 advantage. On ECSU's ensuing possession Nixon was fouled on rebound/put-back and made good on the three point play for the game's eighth and final tie, 56-56. Virginia Union's final basket of the game came courtesy of Taylor White at the 1:33 mark to put the Lady Panthers back up by two.
After Arielle Harris made one of two from the charity stripe with 1:14 remaining, Jadda Jefferies nailed the go-ahead/game winner with a runner with only 20 seconds left.
ECSU's defense forced a desperation three pointer by Lady Walker with 2 seconds left and Harris' eighth rebound of the night sealed the win.
Walker finished one point shy of a double-double with 9 points and 16 rebounds. Nixon also registered double figures for ECSU with 11 points.
ECSU (11-13, CIAA 6-9) will wrap up the regular season against Bowie State University on Saturday at 2pm at the RL Vaughan Center.
