RALEIGH, NC- Shaw University used a big first quarter and held on to cruise past Elizabeth City State University 64-46 Tuesday night in Raleigh, NC.
Breona Jones led all scorers with a season high 20 points. Jones carried the scoring load for the Lady Vikings as ECSU was saddled with foul trouble from the middle of the first quarter.
ECSU's top two leading scorers, Imani Heggins and Jalyn Brown, spent much of the first half on the bench as both were whistled for two fouls in the first quarter of play. As a result ECSU struggled to score and the Lady Bears raced out to a commanding 16-3 lead by the close of the first ten minutes.
The Lady Bears' size in the post forced the Lady Vikings to rely on their outside shooting and ECSU ended the game with a season low 27% from the field making only 19 of 70 attempts. Subsequently Shaw corralled a season high 66 rebounds as a team. Fantasha Tyson led a balanced scoring effort for Shaw with 12 points off the bench.
Bryan Guyton and Eboni Ross both put up double digit rebounding efforts with 14 and 12 boards respectively. The Lady Bears outscored ECSU in bench points 34-8 and in fast break points 16-6. Shaw University moves their record to 7-2 and 1-0 in conference play.
ECSU (2-6, CIAA 0-1) will return to action on Thursday against Saint Augustine's University. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm at Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh.
