PETERSBURG, VA- Nyack College placed three starters in double figures in a close 73-64 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at the Virginia State University Thanksgiving Classic.
The Lady Warriors move to 3-3 on the year behind 21 points from Kelli Smoot. Jaime McKeither added a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds while Mariah Brown chipped in with 14 points.
Imani Heggins scored a team high 19 points for the Lady Vikings while sophomore guard Breona Jones netted 14 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. ECSU was outscored in three of four quarters and trailed the Lady Warriors 51-41 heading into the last ten minutes of play.
In the final quarter, the Lady Vikings charged all the way back to briefly take a one point lead. They opened the fourth on a 15-4 run and with 4:46 remaining a jumper by Heggins gave ECSU a 56-55 lead, their first since the opening minutes of the first quarter. Nyack would retake the lead by a basket but a Breona Jones' layup tied the game at 60 with 3:16 to go.
Unfortunately the Lady Vikings went scoreless from the field for the next two and a half minutes while the Lady Warriors reeled off a 10-0 scoring spurt. Arielle Harris connected on a layup with 39 ticks left to end ECSU's scoring drought.
The Lady Vikings held a slight edge in points in the paint 36-30, while Nyack shot 29-40 from the free throw line to just 10 of 18 attempts for ECSU.
ECSU (0-5) will return to the court on December 9th as a part of a basketball double header at Barton College in Wilson, NC. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm.
