ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Washington Adventist University held off a furious second half rally for a 64-60 win over Elizabeth City State University in game two of the Lady Viking Classic at the RL Vaughan Center.
In the Classic's opener, Wilmington University disposed of Winston-Salem State University 73-59. Sunday's game slate will feature Washington Adventist and Winston-Salem State at 2pm follow by Wilmington versus ECSU at 4pm.
In Saturday's nightcap the Shock improved to 4-1 on the year behind a game high 18 points from Jerria Brown-McDaniel. Brown-McDaniel was only 4 of 12 from the field but made the most of her time at the free throw line converting 9 of 11 attempts. As a team the Lady Vikings took 16 free throws but made only 6 of their shots from the stripe.
After one quarter of play WAU held a slim 11-10 advantage over the Lady Vikings. ECSU briefly took the lead on a layup by Arielle Harris followed by a Mikalia Frazier three-pointer with 9:02 left in the first half. Emily Piazza then pulled the Shock within a basket with two free throws and WAU got a go ahead three pointer by Brown-McDaniel to reclaim the lead at 16-15.
Washington Adventist outscored ECSU 18-14 in the second quarter for a 29-24 halftime lead. With 5:40 to go in the third quarter Courtney Jenkins matched WAU's largest lead of the game with a three pointer to make the score 39-30. From that point to the close of the quarter the Lady Vikings went on a 12-5 run to pull within two points, 44-42, heading to the fourth.
Both teams played at a frenetic pace in the final and deciding quarter as there were 8 lead changes and 7 ties. The Lady Vikings seized their first lead of the second half (49-48) when Frazier nailed a three-pointer with 7:32 remaining.
The final and tenth tie came when the Shock's Natalie Harris sank one of two from the charity stripe, knotting the game at 58 apiece. Jasmine Nixon scored to put the Lady Vikings back in front on ECSU's ensuing possession with 2:48 to go. Both teams then went cold from the field missing the next 6 combined shots from the floor.
The Shock got one of two free throws from Brown-McDaniel and Washington Adventist recaptured the lead with 24 seconds left on a layup by Demyra Selby. After ECSU's next offensive trip came up empty, WAU sealed the game hitting three of four free throws in the waning seconds.
Jasmine Nixon and Jalyn Brown were the only two to net double figures for the Lady Vikings with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
