ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Virginia Union University Lady Panthers rode a 43-36 rebounding edge to a 66-55 win over Elizabeth City State University Wednesday night at the RL Vaughan Center.
Three Lady Panthers registered double figures in rebounds including 19 offensive boards for a 13-9 advantage in second chance points.
Ashle Freeman scored a game high 21 points for the Lady Panthers who pick up their first division win of the year and improve to 6-12 overall (CIAA 2-7).
Jasmine Boyd and Arielle Harris both notched double figures for ECSU with 15 and 13 points respectively. For VUU, Jasmin Dancy and Taylor White both chimed in with double-doubles. Dancy finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while White contributed 16 points and 13 boards.
ECSU fought back from an eleven point halftime deficit and on an Ashley Hughes layup at the 11:25 mark the score stood tied at 34. The Lady Panthers responded with a 19-8 run to take a double digit lead (53-42) with 5:39 left in the contest. The Lady Vikings trimmed the lead to 57-51 on a layup and free throw by Jasmine Boyd with 2:42 remaining but VUU would keep the point spread with solid free throw shooting.
The Lady Panthers got two late baskets White, one an offensive rebound put-back in the waning seconds, to close out the game.
ECSU (7-12, CIAA 2-8) will return to action on Saturday against Bowie State University in Bowie, MD. Game time is scheduled for 2pm.
