ELIZABETH CITY, NC-Virginia State University completed a furious come from behind rally to edge Elizabeth City State University 76-74 Saturday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.
Virginia State faced their largest deficit, 47-34, with 17:24 left in the game. The Lady Trojans overcame ECSU's lead by shooting 65% from the floor in the second half while outscoring the Lady Vikings 44-36.
Dashae Jones poured in a game high 28 points, including 18 in the second half as the Lady Trojans improve to 13-5 overall (CIAA 5-3) and 3-0 in the Northern Division. The undermanned Lady Vikings got balanced scoring, as all five starters netted double figures led by Breona Jones' best outing of the year with a season (team) high of 20 points and 6 assists.
The two teams were virtually even across the board shooting 50% in the game and pulling down 30 rebounds apiece.
The biggest discrepancy came from the free throw line where ECSU was 8 of 10 while Virginia State attempted 24 and made 18, the most significant coming with 1:07 left in regulation.
VSU's Tiffanie Adair was poised to shoot two free throws when a technical foul was accessed to Jadda Jefferies. Jones and Adair both made good on their shots from the charity stripe for a four point swing to put the Lady Trojans up 73-71. After ECSU misfired on their ensuing offensive trip, Jones' jumper with 19 seconds left put VSU in front up 75-71.
Alliyah Floyd connected on a long three pointer with 9 ticks remaining however time ran out for the Lady Vikings and VSU's Jessica Lyons sank one of two from the charity stripe for the final point spread.
The Lady Vikings made a season high 13 three pointers on Saturday and held a 38-32 lead at halftime.
ECSU (7-11, CIAA 2-7) will return to action on Wednesday against Virginia Union University. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm.
