ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Jadda Jefferies poured in a game high 28 points but it was not enough as Shaw University downed Elizabeth City State 66-55 in CIAA basketball action Thursday night.
The Lady Bears were led by Verdine Warner's 18 point, 18 rebound outing as her team moved to 8-6 on the year and 1-0 in CIAA play. Shaw University held a 51-38 rebounding edge over ECSU which led to a 19-4 advantage in second chance points.
The Lady Bears also capitalized on their time at the free throw line, sinking 24 of 34 shots while ECSU shot only 8-10 from the charity stripe for the game.
After taking a five point lead (27-22) into the locker room at the half, the Lady Bears used a 17-8 run to take their largest lead of the game, 46-30 with 9:56 to go. The Lady Vikings clawed back into the game with a 17-7 run and with a Jadda Jefferies jumper at the 4:40 mark, ECSU had trimmed their deficit to six (53-47).
ECSU's attempt at a rally then stalled when the Lady Vikings went cold from the field while Shaw connected on four of their ensuing six possession's to put the game out of reach . During that pivotal stretch which saw the Lady Bears score 10 unanswered, the Lady Vikings were held scoreless for nearly three minutes.
Arielle Harris was the only other ECSU player to register double figures with 10 points on the afternoon. Kaula Jacks and Micah Brooks chipped in with 12 apiece to round out Shaw's double figure performers.
ECSU (5-5, CIAA 0-1) will host Saint Augustine's on Saturday at the RL Vaughan Center. Game time is scheduled for 2:00pm and admission is only $5 for the day's doubleheader.
