WINSTON-SALEM, NC- Winston-Salem State University amassed 454 yards of total offense as the Rams cruised past the Elizabeth City State University Vikings 35-7 Saturday evening at Bowman Gray Stadium.
The Ram quarterback tandem of Rudy Johnson and Phillip Sims each tossed two touchdowns and combined for 349 yards through the air as WSSU improves to 3-1, 1-0 in the CIAA.
The Vikings' only score of the evening came on a 28 yard catch and run from Tyrell Houghton to Lovie Banks-Rose, Jr to tie the game at 7 with 7:21 left in the first half. WSSU responded with their second TD of the quarter at the 3:32 mark to take 14-7 lead at the intermission.
Winston-Salem put the game out of reach with two touchdowns in the third quarter and another with 9:33 left in the game for the final point spread. The Vikings totaled 371 yards of total offense but struggled in scoring position going 0-5 in the red zone on Saturday. The Rams' defensive line also held the ECSU running game in check, surrendering only 68 net yards on the ground.
The Vikings had a chance to put points on the board as the first half expired but Jeff Flores' 35 yard field goal attempt missed wide left.
Stephen Williams led all defenders with 15 tackles (9 solo) while Quentin Williams chipped in with 11 tackles. Will Boyette, who replaced an injured Tyrell Houghton at the start of the second half, finished the evening with 154 yards on 13-25 passing.
The Rams had an effective air attack, spreading the ball around to nine different receivers. Marcel Caver caught 9 passes for 104 yards while Eric Williams finished with 69 yards and two receiving touchdowns.
Antonio Huff had a solid all-around game for ECSU with 167 all-purpose yards. Huff caught 8 passes for 87 yards and rolled up 80 yards between punt and kickoff returns.
