ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Viking rallied from a halftime deficit to edge Virginia Union University 56-52 Wednesday night at the RL Vaughan Center.
DaShera Boone almost single handedly kept the Lady Vikings in the game in the second half. With the exception of two free throws by Jasmine Boyd with 12:57 left in the game, Boone scored all 14 straight points between the 17:42 and 12:04 marks. Her last bucket made the score the score 45-42 in favor of the Lady Panthers.
Her first nine points, capped by back to back three-pointers, gave ECSU their first lead since the game's opening basket, and their largest advantage of to that point 35-30 with 15:18 to go.
Virginia Union did some sharp shooting of their own during that stretch, draining three from beyond the three- point arc plus a layup by Ashle Freeman to reclaim the lead 41-38 with 13:11 remaining.
ECSU then used a 7-0 run to take the lead for good as the Lady Panthers went scoreless for nearly nine minutes down the stretch. Virginia Union (8-15, CIAA 5-10) only made 2 baskets over the game's final twelve and a half minutes.
Jasmine Boyd topped ECSU in scoring with 15 points while VUU's Ashle Freeman led all scorers with 25 points.
ECSU (7-17, CIAA 4-11) will wrap up the regular season at Bowie State Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 1:00pm. Follow on Twitter @ECSUVikings and visit www.ecsuvikings.com for more information.
