ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Virginia State University, the #13 ranked women's basketball team, stayed true to form in a 71-59 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday night at the RL Vaughan Center.
It was VSU's eleventh straight win as the Lady Trojans move to 21-1 overall and 12-1 in CIAA play. They have a strangle hold on the CIAA Northern Division race with a 7-0 record with three games left in their regular season. Virginia State got balanced scoring on Saturday with three of their starters landing in double figures. Lamesha Deal netted 16 points while Shakirah Gray and Alexandria Massado both chipped in with 14 points apiece.
Tyche' Mozie led ECSU with a game high 17 points off the bench.
Virginia State led from tipoff to buzzer, galloping out to a 16-6 lead with 14:35 to go in the first half. The Lady Vikings fought back and on a jumper by Tyche' Mozie at the 11:36 mark, ECSU faced its smallest deficit of the night 16-14. VSU went on a 7-0 run to push their lead back to double digits and took a 37-23 at the intermission.
The Lady Trojans were outscored 36-34 in the second half however the blew the game open midway through the second stanza with a 24-12 run, which gave them their biggest lead of the night, a 25 point difference, 61-36.
DaShera Boone was the other Lady Viking to net double figures with 14 points.
