ETTRICK, VA-The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Cheyney University 68-60 Saturday afternoon at the Chick-fil-A Classic at Daniel Gymnasium.
After shooting blistering 65% from the field in the first half, Cheyney took a 37-30 lead into the locker room at the intermission. TaKayla Ellis led the Lady Wolves with 16 points, 11 of which came in the first half.
The Lady Vikings cranked up the defense in the second half of play holding Cheyney to just 23 points on 5 of 21 shots. Trailing by seven with 10:04 remaining, ECSU reeled off a 9-0 run and capped by a Jasmine Boyd three pointer, took a 51-49 lead.
The teams traded baskets until a Chalise Greenwood three-ball with 1:51 left put ECSU in front for good 58-56. The Lady Wolves went without a field goal the final 2:49 and ECSU sealed the win over that same span by going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.
Jadda Jefferies led all scorers with 23 points and Jasmine Nixon added 15 points and 8 rebounds.
Cheyney (1-4) was 21-27 from the free throw line in the game and out rebounded ECSU 35-27.
ECSU (2-3) will return to action with a non-conference matchup against Fayetteville State on Monday at 5:30pm in Fayetteville, NC.
