ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Jadda Jefferies scored a season high 27 points as the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings prevailed with a 80-74 overtime win over Chowan University Saturday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.
Jasmine Walker opened the five minute overtime with a 3-pointer that sparked a 7-0 run and a lead that ECSU would not relinquish. The two teams seemingly had a free throw shooting contest in the overtime session. After the Lady Vikings took a 72-65 advantage, they padded their lead with a solid 10-12 performance from the free throw line while the Hawks went 4-4 from the charity stripe.
Walker and Chelsey Davis both chipped in with 18 points apiece for ECSU and Alisha Mobley topped the Hawks' scorers with 16 points.
The win was a much needed one for the Lady Vikings. In what was the division opener for both teams, ECSU snapped an eight game losing skid, earning their first victory since December 2, 2013 (non- conference vs. Fayetteville State).
In the first half, the Lady Vikings built an 32-21 halftime lead after scoring 12 points off 14 first half Hawk turnovers. ECSU also outscored Chowan (8-9, CIAA 2-5) 10-2 in fast break points over the first twenty minutes.
The Hawks faced their largest deficit of the contest after a three pointer by Jasmine Walker gave ECSU a 43-28 lead with 14:34 left in the game. After two free throws by Alisha Mobley cut Chowan's deficit to single digits (48-40) at the 10:12 mark, the Hawks reeled off a 16-6 run to take a 56-54 lead with 5:01 to go.
The final five minutes of regulation had three lead changes and four ties, the latter coming when Summer Curtis hit a layup with 13 seconds left to send the game to an extra session tied a 65.
For the game the Hawks out-rebounded ECSU 44-34 with 20 coming on the offensive glass.
