WSSU SLIPS BY ECSU LADY VIKINGS 66-63

ELIZABETH CITY, NC-Winston-Salem State University rallied from a three point halftime deficit to earn a 66-63 win over Elizabeth City State University Monday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.

ECSU trailed 62-61 until a DaShera Boone layup gave ECSU a one point lead with 1:01 left in the game.

Dionna Scott hit a go ahead layup with 32 seconds left to give WSSU a 64-63 lead and after ECSU's final possession came up empty, Jovonah Graham sealed the win with two free throws.

The Lady Rams were + 6 in the second half (37-31) and overcame 22 turnovers to capture the three point victory over the Lady Vikings. ECSU's losing streak is now at eight games and they finish cross division play versus the CIAA South at 0-6.

After holding a 32-29 advantage at the intermission the Lady Vikings saw their lead evaporate when WSSU opened the second half on an 8-2 run. Jasmine Elum scored the first basket of the second half then sank two free throws on consecutive possessions to put her team in front 35-34 at the 18:00 minute mark. Amanda Hairston then capped the run with a steal and layup with 17:22 to go.

Both teams went cold from the floor for the next three minutes until Jasmine Walker hit a layup to pull ECSU within a point, 37-36 with 14:26 remaining. WSSU and ECSU exchanged baskets on the next four possessions and the Lady Rams held onto a 5 point lead, 43-38.

The score was 45-41 in favor of WSSU but then the game went on another scoring drought that spanned a little over three minutes. The Lady Vikings then went on am 9-0 run, sparked by seven straight points by Jasmine Boyd to seize a 50-45 lead with 8:04 remaining.

The rest of the game had two lead changes and four ties, the latter with the game knotted at 57 with 4:47 left in regulation.

Jadda Jefferies led four ECSU players in double figures with 14 points. Boyd chipped in with 12 points while Boone and Chelsey Davis finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Elum led WSSU's charge with a game high 16 points. The Lady Rams move to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the CIAA.
