ELIZABETH CITY, NC-The Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls moved to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in conference play with a 59-44 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.
Deanna Downer scored a team high 19 points off the bench and Shanel Sweet scored 13 points for JCSU.
The Lady Golden Bulls tallied 32 points of ECSU turnovers; The Lady Vikings tied a season high with 27 in the contest.
Early on both team struggled from the field, until Quinesha Lynch broke the scoreless tie with a three-pointer at the 15:56 mark. That basket cued a 9-0 JCSU run until the Lady Vikings finally got on the board with a layup by Jasmine Nixon with 13:09 to go. ECSU rallied to tie the game a 16 apiece with 6:36 left before the intermission until Downer put the Lady Golden Bulls back in front with two free throws.
After JCSU held a 30-24 lead at the half, ECSU opened the second stanza with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 30 with 16:17 to go. After JCSU reclaimed the lead the Lady Vikings got within a basket on two more occasions before JCSU seized a double digit lead (47-37) with 8:30 remaining. In the second half, ECSU hit 7-23 from the floor and scored only two baskets over the final 10:38 of play.
DaShera Boone and Chelsey Davis shared team high honors with 10 apiece.
