Final Stats
PETERSBURG, VA- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings went to the wire with Virginia State, managing to escape with a 49-47 victory over the Lady Trojans Saturday at Daniel Gymnasium.
The two teams traded blows all evening and neither led their opponent by more than six points at any point in the game. The Lady Trojans had their six point advantage with 3:55 left in the first half but the Lady Viking rallied to tie the game at 24 at the intermission.
With 7:34 to go in the game the Lady Viking took their six point lead 43-37 on a free throw by Shatara Jackson. Virginia State then scored six unanswered on back-to-back three pointers by Yashica Blakney, tying the game for the 10th and final time.
The Lady Vikings took a 49-44 lead on two De'Rya Wylie free throws with 1:59 remaining until a three-pointer by Dashae Jones with 41 seconds left pulled the Lady Trojans within a two points. ECSU's next possession came up empty and with 6 seconds left Jones was fouled, sending her to the free throw line for one plus the bonus.
Jones misfired on the free throw and ECSU's Jasmine Whitehurst was fouled and sent to the line. Whitehurst missed the free throw but the Lady Trojans turned the ball over on their ensuing possession and the Lady Vikings held on for the two point win. The Lady Vikings won the battle of the boards 53-49 and ultimately won the game on second chance points 21-1.
Whitehurst led ECSU with 11 points while Stephanie Harper added 8 points and 14 rebounds.
Virginia State (11-13, CIAA 4-10) was paced by Lamesha Deal's double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. ECSU (21-3, CIAA 13-1) will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Virginia Union University. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm.
