ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Clark Atlanta University had three starters with 20 + points in the Lady Panthers' 84-76 win over Elizabeth City State University Wednesday night at the RL Vaughan Center.
Erika Sumpter led all players, posting game highs of 25 points and 21 rebounds while teammate Jomanda Small contributed a double-double of 21 points and 16 boards.
Conisha Hicks accounted for all of CAU's three-pointers on the night with 4 from downtown, finishing the evening with 23 points.
The Lady Panthers built double digit leads in both halves of the game; the first a 12 point advantage (20-8) with 11:08 to go in the first stanza. The Lady Vikings cut CAU's first half lead to six points on a layup by Ashley Hughes with 18 seconds left however Hicks countered with her team's first three-pointer of the game to take a 33-24 lead at the intermission.
ECSU's offense improved on their 10-35 shooting in the first half to fire at a 50% clip (21-42) over the game's final 20 minutes.
A 15-9 scoring spurt gave Clark Atlanta their largest lead of the game, 55-37, with 11:52 to go. The Lady Vikings fought in the final minutes of the contest and managed to cut the lead to 8 on a DaShera Boone layup at the 2:16 mark but Hicks nailed a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to push the lead back to double digits. The Lady Panthers went 6-8 in the final 1:12 to close out the win.
Boone and Chelsey Davis scored 14 apiece to lead ECSU with Davis adding a 12 rebound effort.
