ELIZABETH CITY, NC-Fayetteville State's Shuanda led all scorers with 21 points as the Lady Broncos defeated Elizabeth City State University 75-70 Monday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.
FSU now stands alone as the only team in the CIAA with an unblemished conference record at 3-0 and 11-2 overall mark. Subsequently ECSU, who was led by De'Rya Wylie's 18 points, suffers its first league setback and home loss of the season.
ECSU began the game 0-9 from the floor and the Lady Broncos charged out to a 14-0 lead. Derricka Henry ended the Lady Vikings' scoring drought with a jumper at the 15:29 mark. Fayetteville State did not let up, continuing their hot shooting en route to a 17 point lead with 9:03 to go in the opening half.
The Lady Vikings closed the half on an 18-4 run and only trailed FSU 33-30 at the break.
Midway through the second half ECSU went ahead 53-47 on a layup by Wylie, but the Lady Broncos rallied with 8 unanswered to take a two point lead with 9:02 remaining. The game's final eight minutes saw three ties and eight lead changes. Fayetteville State took charge for good with an 8-2 run with under two minutes to play.
The Lady Vikings only hit two shots from the floor in the game's waning minutes. FSU finished the evening shooting 49% from the field.
