ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Shatara Jackson was scored a new career high and five Lady Vikings tallied double figures as Elizabeth City State University stunned #18 Shaw University 96-86 in CIAA action Thursday night.
Jackson led the way with a balanced outing of 29 points, 7 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals in the ten point victory. Fellow senior Stephanie Harper set a season personal best with 23 points and finished one board shy of a double-double with 9 rebounds.
The Lady Vikings had their best offensive showing of the season shooting 63% from the floor including a blistering 73% clip in the second stanza, which proved to be the difference in the game.
In the opening half, ECSU led Shaw (8-2, CIAA 0-1) by eight points on four different occasions. The Lady Bears chipped away and tied the game six times before a go ahead jumper by Taylor Dalrymple with 39 seconds left in the first half gave the visitors a 39-37 lead at the intermission.
With 13:09 left in regulation and the score knotted at 56, the Lady Vikings broke the game open with a 14-2 run for a 70-58 advantage. The Lady Bears rallied, and cut the lead back to eight (73-65) on two free throws with 7:01 to go until a 12-6 spurt gave ECSU a 16 point lead with 2:26 remaining.
Offensively the Lady Bears also displayed a balanced scoring attack. Like ECSU, five players landed in double figures led by Ronika Ransford who finished with a team high 24 points.
