MURFREESBORO, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings won their fourth straight game, topping Chowan University 55-50 Saturday afternoon at the Helms Center.
Stephanie Harper, Shatara Jackson and DaShera Boone each scored 10 points each in the first division game of the season. ECSU sits in first place in the CIAA North (1-0) with a conference mark of 6-1.
The 55 points ECSU scored on Saturday is their second lowest total in a victory this season; they defeated Winston -Salem State on Monday (1/14) 49-47.
Both teams struggled on offense, particularly in the opening half. The Lady Vikings shot 29% from the floor on 11-37 attempts while Chowan (2-13, CIAA 2-5) was 8-25 from the field, with three shots coming from beyond the three-point arc. The Hawks committed 17 turnovers to 10 for ECSU and the contest was tied at 24 at the intermission.
The lead changed hands to begin the second half. After a Stephanie Harper layup was countered by 3-pointer by Talaya Lynch Chowan took a 27-26 lead at the 18:51 mark.
Shatara Jackson's layup began an 8-1 run, giving ECSU a lead that they would not relinquish. The Lady Vikings took a 10 point advantage twice, the largest differential of the game, courtesy of three-pointers by DaShera Boone at the 10:06 and 8:23 marks.
Talaya Lynch led all scorers with 18 while Janelle Murphy chipped in with 14 points.
