Final Stats
WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings rallied from 16 points down in the final six minutes of regulation to stun Winston-Salem State University 49-47 Monday night at the C.E. Gaines Center.
The 49 points is fewest the Lady Vikings have scored in any game this season. With 6:09 remaining in the game the Lady Rams (9-7, CIAA 4-2) held their largest lead of the night 43-27.
At the 2:39 mark a layup by Stephanie Harper ignited a 14-0 run that led to the two-point win. After Harper's score, Jasmine Whitehurst `s three pointer, her fourth of the second half, gave ECSU a single digit deficit for the first time since the opening half.
A fast break layup by Shatara Jackson with 57 seconds left trimmed the WSSU lead to seven (47-40). After a defensive stop, a Derricka Henry jumper in the paint made the score 47-42 with 43 seconds to go.
Then the Lady Vikings cranked up their defense forcing three turnovers on WSSU's final three possessions. The first miscue led to a Harper offensive board and put-back on which she was fouled. She converted the free throw to make the score 47-45 with 21 ticks left.
After an ECSU timeout, the Lady Viking defense forced a five second call on the in-bounds and Jackson made the most of it with running jumper in the lane and the score was tied at 47 with 10 seconds on the clock.
Jovonah Graham was called for a double dribble giving the ball back to ECSU. Harper again came to the rescue corralling a missed jumper by Jackson and she was fouled on a layup attempt.
Harper sank two free throws with 2 seconds left to finish the comeback.
Had it not been for the game's ending the story would have been one of turnovers for the Lady Vikings. ECSU found themselves behind 25-15 at the half due to 18 first half turnovers. They finished with 30 turnovers in the contest.
Jasmine Whitehurst led all scorers with 19 points while Taylar Wells paced the Lady Rams with 16 points off the bench.
