PETERSBURG, VA- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings captured a 85-65 win over Washington Adventist University Friday afternoon at the 5th Annual Chick-fil-A Holiday Classic on the campus of Virginia State University.
The Lady Vikings took control from the opening tip, charging out to a 16-0 lead to start the game. WAU regrouped with a run of their own, a 13-0 spark, to cut their deficit to 3 with 12:47 remaining in the first half. In the first half the Lady Vikings outscored the Lady Shock 17-4 in fast break points and in bench points 24-0 but held just a six point advantage at the intermission (38-32).
WAU made the first two baskets of the second half to pull within two points, 38-36 with 19:23 left in the game. ECSU then regained momentum with an 18-7 run pushing the lead to 15 (58-43) with 13:53 left. The Lady Shock (0-5) trimmed the lead to nine, 61-52, with 10:58 remaining but back to back layups by Stephanie Harper gave ECSU a double digit lead that would hold for the rest of regulation.
The Lady Vikings placed five in double-digits, led by 12 points apiece from Jasmine Whitehurst and Shawnte Taylor. Harper and DaShera Boone both chipped in with 11 points each and Shatara Jackson added 10 points and six assists.
