PRINCESS ANNE, MD- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore placed four players in double figures as the Hawks held on to defeat Elizabeth City State University 66-62 Saturday evening.
With ECSU up 62-60 and under a minute to go, Karona Roach nailed a three-pointer with 24 seconds left to give UMES a one point advantage. A Lady Viking turnover on their next possession gave the ball back to UMES with 14 seconds to go. ECSU was forced to foul and the Hawks sealed the game hitting 3 of 4 free throws for the final point spread.
ECSU took the lead on two free throws by Stephanie Harper with 12:59 remaining and with the exception of a tie that occurred at the 9:18 mark, the Lady Vikings led most of the second half. Harper netted a game high 22 points for ECSU.
UMES held a 35-33 lead at the intermission. Roach finished with a team high 17 points off the bench while fellow reserves Shawnee Sweeney and Alexis Udoji chipped in with 13 and 11 points respectively. Jessica Long was the only Hawk starter to hit double figures with 10 points.
Eastern Shore's bench outscored ECSU's bench 48-19.
The win gives the Hawks their first victory of the year while ECSU suffers its first setback of the season.
