LADY VIKINGS CRUISE PAST CLAFLIN IN SEASON OPENER 77-51

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings won their season opener, capturing a 77-51 victory over Claflin University Saturday night in game two of the Chick-fil-A/Lady Viking Tipoff Classic at the RL Vaughan Center.

In the Classic's opening game Virginia State University held on to defeat Paine College 59-49, earning VSU Head Coach James Hill his 100th career victory.

In the nightcap, the Lady Vikings placed four in double figures with Shatara Jackson leading the way with a team high 17 points. Newcomer Shawnte Taylor came off the bench to net 12 points while Stephanie Harper and De'Rya Wylie chopped in with 10 points apiece.

ECSU led all but 1:20 of the first half and blew the game open to take a 39-31 lead at halftime. The Lady Vikings scored 30 points of 29 Lady Panthers' miscues and outscored Claflin's bench 27-8. The two teams were virtually even in rebounding (46 for ECSU, 44 for Claflin) but the Lady Vikings shot a slightly better clip from the floor at 38% to 31% for the Lady Panthers.

Talaya Robinson paced Claflin with a double-double and game bests of 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Day two of the Classic will begin at 3:00pm tomorrow with Virginia State taking on Claflin University followed by Paine College versus ECSU at 5:00pm.
