FAYETTEVILLE, NC-Elizabeth City State University's Daronte McNeill rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings cruised past Fayetteville State University 42-21 at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium Saturday evening.
The Vikings ground game gave Fayetteville State (0-2, CIAA 0-1) all they could handle on Saturday evening. McNeill, Kevin Swain and DeAundre Barfield combined for 245 yards and four touchdowns, each averaging at least 5.1 yards per carry.
McNeill, who carried the ball 24 times, sealed the Vikings' convincing win on a 1-yard TD run with three minutes left in the game. The score was set up by a methodical 15 play, 84 yard drive which consumed almost 11 minutes of the fourth quarter, thus keeping the ball away from FSU who mounted an attempt at a comeback with two second half scores.
The Broncos attempts at a rally proved to be too much to overcome after facing a 35-7 halftime deficit. The Vikings' game opening drive ended with a 7-0 lead and quickly went to 14-0 after a 56 yard interception was returned for a touchdown by William Davis with 2:06 to go in the first quarter. FSU got on the scoreboard when backup QB Chauncey Conception connected with Antonio Allen for a 35-yard touchdown strike with 14:49 to go before the break.
With 9:02 remaining in the first half McNeill broke for his first TD o f the game, 10-yard score to push the lead to 21-7. Then back to back Bronco turnovers deep in FSU territory tacked on two more scores; a Brandon Smith interception at the FSU 9-ayrd line set up a 3-yard rushing score by DeAundre Barfield at the 8:52 mark and with 5:28 to go before the intermission, John Davis scooped up a fumble at the Bronco 5-yard line and took it to the end zone for the 35-7 halftime lead.
The Vikings (2-2 overall) will travel to take on Shaw University on Saturday, September 24th. Game time is scheduled for 2:00pm at Durham County Stadium. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com and follow on Twitter @ECSUVikings.
