MURFREESBORO, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings earned a season split with Chowan University, handing the Hawks a 57-51 overtime loss Saturday afternoon at the Helms Center.
The Lady Vikings trailed 23-17 at the break but then rallied with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 29 apiece with 14:26 remaining in regulation. The Hawks regained the lead after a free throw by Courtney Knight was followed by a Talaya Lynch 3-pointer, giving the home team a 44-40 advantage with 3:39 to play.
Unfortunately for Chowan (12-11, CIAA 9-6) they went 0-4 from the floor after Lynch's trey ball while four free throws, two apiece by Kenyatta Gill (2:46 mark) and Shatara Jackson (1:25 mark) sent the game to an extra session knotted at 44.
In overtime ECSU went 3-4 from the field and 7-13 from the free throw line, outscoring Chowan 13-7. The Hawks struggled from the floor in the extra session, hitting only 2-10 attempts at the basket.
ECSU held a decisive edge in points off turnovers, 19-6 and held a 12-2 fast break advantage.
Lynch and Brittany Nicholson paced the Hawks with 13 points apiece while Gill and Shaquella Johnson shared the Lady Viking high honors with 11 points each.
