LADY VIKINGS TOP WINSTON-SALEM STATE IN OVERTIME 81-76

WINSTON-SALEM, NC-Kenyatta Gill poured in a game high 22 points as the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings earned a 81-76 overtime win over Winston-Salem State University Saturday evening at the C.E. Gaines Center.

Jasmine Newkirk gave WSSU a 68-67 lead on a running layup with 8 seconds left in regulation. With 4 seconds left Shatara Jackson was fouled and sent to the free throw line for two shots. After calmly tying the game with the first free throw, Jackson misfired on the second attempt sending the game to an extra five minutes.

ECSU opened overtime with a three-pointer by Gill to give the Lady Vikings the lead for good. ECSU shot a perfect 3-3 from the field in the extra session and converted 8-13 shots from the charity stripe.

On the opposite end WSSU (8-6, CIAA 3-2) was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line but only hit one basket from the floor in overtime.

The Lady Rams were plus 10 (42-32) on the glass in the loss including 24 offensive boards helping them to a decisive 23-7 edge in second chance points. Courtney Medley had a team high 20 points for WSSU.
