LAST SECOND SHOT LIFTS WEST LIBERTY PAST ECSU

Nov. 12, 2010

Final Stats

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Jenni Roberts' layup with 3.4 seconds remaining lifted West Liberty State over Elizabeth City State University 59-58 Friday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

The CIAA and WVIAC conferences split their meetings on Friday as each league went 2-2. Shaw University defeated West Virginia State 71-59 while Saint Augustine's topped Davis & Elkins 87-56.

Prior to the Lady Vikings loss to West Liberty, Glenville State handily defeated Virginia Union 102-70.

A three-pointer by Laura Malernee with 2:44 remaining in the contest gave the Hilltoppers their largest lead of the game, an 8-point spread, 57-49. The Lady Vikings scored 8 straight points and after Whitney Gray hit one of two free throws and with 12 seconds left, ECSU held a slim 58-57 lead. The missed free throw was corralled by WLU's Emily Blevins setting the stage for Robert's last second heroics.

ECSU held the edge in points in the paint (24-18), second chance points (17-9), and behind a team high 17 reserve points by Stephanie Harper, outscored the Hilltopper bench 39-5. However poor shooting haunted the Lady Vikings most of the evening as they went a dismal 18-67 from the floor. Even with the poor shooting the game was tightly contested with 9 ties and 13 lead changes.

Harper had 10 points to post her first double-double an ECSU uniform. Malernee lead all scorers with a game high 18 points, all of which came beyond the three-point arc.

Saturday's games will begin at 1:00pm as Shaw will take on Glenville State, followed by Saint Augustine's and West Liberty at 3:00pm. Virginia Union and West Virginia State will square off at 5:00pm while ECSU will look to bounce back when they face Davis & Elkins at 7:00pm .
