Final Stats
PETERSBURG, VA- The Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings picked up their third Eastern Division victory with an 63-58 upset of the Virginia State Lady Trojans Saturday evening at Daniel Gymnasium.
ECSU's win gives the Lady Trojans, who are 5th in the latest Atlantic Region rankings, only their second home loss of the 2008-09 season. Virginia State (19-6, CIAA 10-6) dropped a 64-60 decision to Bowie State on January 3rd in Petersburg.
The Lady Vikings led from the opening tip-off and never trailed in the contest. ECSU built a 13-point lead the second half but had to stave off a late VSU rally for the five-point win. The Lady Trojans used a 6-0 with 2:48 remaining to cut the lead to 59-58. Unfortunately for the home crowd, VSU turned the ball over on their final two possessions and Kearah Jefferys and Briana Glover went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line to seal the win.
Virginia State struggled from the free throw line converting only 7-of-16 attempts while ECSU shot 88% from the charity stripe (15-of-17).
Joyce Freeman led all scorers with 23 points.
The Lady Vikings (6-19, CIAA 3-13) will return home to host Bowie State University on Tuesday, February 17th. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm at the RL Vaughan Center. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
