ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Sophomore forward April Whitaker hit a three-pointer with 45 seconds left to give the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings a late edge in their 60-57 win Sunday afternoon over the Virginia State University Lady Trojans.
On the previous possession Shaquella Johnson hit a three to tie the game at 54 apiece. The tie was broken with Courtney Scott lobbed a pass from out of bounds to Whitaker who with only four seconds remaining on the shot clock kissed the ball off the glass from long range. The shot was only the second score of the evening for Whitaker who also pulled down a game high 14 rebounds.
Playing in the final home game of their careers Sha-Teisa Sharpe and Cheniece Arthur led the Lady Vikings with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Arthur helped ice the game with two free throws with 13 ticks left.
Eugenia Carson led Virginia State with a team high 14 points. The Lady Trojans drop to 10-15 overall and 5-12 in the CIAA.
